  • IPASS 3¢ Charge
Q: Why am I being charged this fee?
A: This fee is being collected to help off set certain cost associated with interoperability of E-ZPass. The E-ZPass group is made up of 22 agencies all offering seamless interoperability. Some roads like the Indiana Toll Road and the Ohio Turnpike charge monthly fees, ranging from 75¢ to $1. While others like Illinois do not charge monthly fees. However, the Illinois Tollway (I-PASS) is charging a 3¢ transaction fee.

Q: Will the fee be added to my I-Pass bill?
A: Yes, these fees will be deducted from your I-PASS account – you do not need to take any additional actions. Continue using your I-Pass just as you do today for seamless travel on all E-ZPass roads.

Q: I only use the Chicago Skyway, can I avoid the fee?
A: Yes, You can sign up for an i-Zoom issued by the Indiana Toll Road and you will avoid the transaction fees but you could be subject to other account related fees such as a $1 per month account management fee. If you are an infrequent Skyway user, you may want to continue to utilize your I-Pass. Frequent Chicago Skyway users (more than 40 times per month – such as daily commuters) may want to consider trading their I-PASS for an i-Zoom transponder issued by the Indiana Toll Road. i-Zoom users pay a $1 per month account fee, which will be a savings over transaction fees for frequent users.

Q: Do I need to get an additional transponder?
A: No, this fee helps to ensure you only need one tag for all the roads in the E-ZPass network. We do not recommend that drivers maintain two E-Z Pass compatible transponders since the competing signals could result in double charges.

    Q: Should I cancel my I-Pass?
A: If you are an I-PASS user who is a frequent traveler of the Chicago Skyway, you may want to consider trading your I-Pass for an i-Zoom. For example, 40 transactions in a month’s time on the Chicago Skyway, will reflect an additional $1.20 in transaction fees for that particular month (40 transactions x 3¢ = $1.20). Switching to i-Zoom may be a better option for a frequent driver. If a driver averages less than 34 transactions, sticking with I-PASS may be the right choice.
