How to Pay

Currently, the methods of payment accepted at the Chicago Skyway Toll Plaza are cash, major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express, etc.), and E-ZPass/I-PASS toll transponders. Each method of payment will be clearly marked by signage while approaching the plaza and by electronic signs directly above each lane. Check Toll Road 101 for more information.

Cash, Credit, i-Pass

CASH is ONLY accepted in designated "CASH" lanes located on the right side of the toll plaza. Skyway only accepts United States currency up to $100 bills (foreign currency will NOT be accepted).

Credit Card is accepted in all lanes.

E-ZPASS/I-PASS ONLY lanes DO NOT accept cash.  These lanes are located on the left side of the toll plaza, however E-ZPass/I-PASS customers can use ANY toll lane!

Failure to Pay a Toll

The registered owner of a vehicle that travels through the Skyway Toll Plaza without payment of the proper toll is responsible for any and all missed tolls or violations, whether or not the unpaid toll was intentional or if someone else was driving the vehicle.

If for any reason you cannot pay your toll at the lane, DO NOT back your vehicle out of the toll lane or drive through the gate – it is unsafe and can cause damage.  A toll collector or automated payment machine in your lane can issue a toll violation notice to you with payment instructions.  You can also search for your toll violation on our website in the “Pay a Missed Toll” section. You have up to seven (7) days to pay your toll before any administrative or collection fees are assessed.

If you did not pay your toll at the Skyway Toll Plaza and cannot find your toll violation online, or if you are having trouble with our online payment system, please contact customer service for further assistance.

ALL MISSED TOLL PAYMENTS MUST INCLUDE THE TOLL VIOLATION NUMBER AND THE ASSOCIATED LICENSE PLATE NUMBER SO YOUR VIOLATION CAN BE PROPERLY RELEASED.  If you make your toll payment online, by mail, or in person at our office, within the 7-day grace period, no additional fees will be assessed for the related violation. Please, pay on time to avoid additional fees!

Fees and Penalties

If you fail to pay your toll within the 7-day grace period, you may be assessed the following collection fees in addition to your original unpaid toll:

Administrative Fee                  $4.00
Video Charge Fee                     $6.00
Service Fee                                 $29.00
Online/Phone Payment Fee   $4.75

Starting January 1st, 2024, fees will increase to:

Administrative Fee                  $4.25
Video Charge Fee                     $6.25
Service Fee                                 $31.90
Online/Phone Payment Fee   $4.95

Further, to the extent allowed by the laws of your state, toll evaders may be subject to additional civil penalties and further enforcement action.  For example, your toll violation(s) may be sent to our partner, Professional Account Management (PAM), a collection agency under contract with the Skyway, and/or to the Chicago Police Department. For information regarding the status of your toll violation(s), please go to “Pay a Missed Toll” section or contact customer service.

If the status of your toll violation reads “sent to collections,” please contact PAM directly by phone at 1-866-449-7577 or through the PAM website: www.dspayments.com/skyway, to settle your account.

E-ZPass Info

The E-ZPass® system is an electronic toll collection (ETC) method that makes travel through participating toll facilities faster and more convenient, helping reduce traffic congestion for everyone.

Conventional toll collection methods require you to deposit coins or tokens, pay a cashier, swipe credit cards, or process tickets at toll plazas.  This reduces highway capacity because the number of vehicles that can be processed at toll plazas is limited.  E-ZPass customers travel through toll plazas in specially designated lanes where the toll is paid electronically from a pre-paid account through use of an E-ZPass/I-PASS transponder.

The E-ZPass system includes three basic components: a toll transponder issued to each customer that is mounted inside a vehicle; an antenna near the entrance to a toll plaza or lane, which reads the transponder and authorizes a deduction to the related account for the toll; and toll lane video cameras to confirm the transponder is being used with the right vehicle and to help identify toll evaders.

For a list of toll roads, bridges and tunnels in states that offer E-ZPass, click here.

You can open an account through an E-ZPass member agency and use your new E-ZPass/I-PASS transponder throughout the E-ZPass network!

The Illinois Tollway and certain New York toll agencies charge a $.03 transaction fee per transit on the Chicago Skyway if an I-PASS or New York toll agency E-ZPass transponder was used to pay the Skyway toll.  Skyway collects, but fully remits the $.03 fee to the toll agency imposing the charge.  If you see a $.03 charge on your account and you have questions about it, please contact the toll agency that issued your transponder for more information.

The benefits of using the E-ZPass system include:

  • Ability to avoid waiting in cash or credit card lanes for transactions to be processed, saving time, fuel expense, and minimizing vehicle emissions

  • Less traffic congestion through available open road or “E-ZPASS-ONLY” designated toll lanes on most member agency roads

  • Seamless, accurate, interoperable toll collection and transfer through member toll authorities

  • Discounts available to E-ZPass account holders through some member agencies

  • Easy access to your account information (e.g., transponder usage, account balance, replenishment authorization)

  • No need to retrieve/present toll tickets or fumble for cash or credit cards
