The Chicago Skyway is a critical transportation artery for communities and countless individuals.
To ensure a great customer experience, we are always looking at how we can create a safer, less congested, and more efficient experience through responsible upgrades.
At the Chicago Skyway, we are committed to minimizing the impact of our roadway operations on the environment and we have made several upgrades to lessen our footprint, including:
- Completing a major modification to the Skyway’s lighting system, which included replacing 536 roadway lights, 34 bridge lights, and 113 garage lights with LED (light-emitting diodes) fixtures. LED lighting is energy efficient, reliable, and eliminates harmful mercury deposits and post-consumer waste in landfills.
- Implementing “smart” motion sensors for lighting at our main bridge office to reduce electricity consumption.
- Completing lead paint abatement on the majority of our structures, including the two largest – the Stony Island Bridge and the Calumet “High Bridge.”
With hundreds of travelers crossing over our bridge each day, we are committed to ensuring the Chicago Skyway remains one of the safest, fastest, and most dependable toll roads in the nation. We will continue working hard to ensure the Chicago Skyway is a leader for decades to come.
